Eric, what do you think of this article?

I think that narcissism is a rather difficult subject to talk about..for me at least. I think that to do self confident is a good thing (this is also coming from a person who doesn't have much confidences and struggles with liking herself). The thought that went through my head was would we rather be a country of depressed self loathing type or would we rather want to be a country who love themselves. Ok, so I think here, there needs to be a gray zone...this article i think is just looking at the negative aspects of "self respect" but also, i would be interested to see iwhat cross section is being looked at and what cross section is being seen as the base of our society?

Derrida, from what i recall from the film we saw in class, said that everyone has elements of narcissism, even himself. Narcissism can get in the way of relationships but really who cares because obviously those people have other agendas.

For me, this article is a joke. It falls along the same lines as all the other studies done about how overindulgence and underindulgence (is that a word?) lead to destruction. I think anything in moderation is alright, but of course, all these scientific studies and media attention take everything way over the top.

If my notes are correct, Derrida mentioned that love is narcissistic. And without narcissism we do not have the Other, therefore we do not have love. A little bit of self love is needed to love the Other. Or at least I think that's what he's saying.

When it comes to myself and narcissism, the first thing that came to mind was not infatuation with the physical image of myself necessarily, but the love of the things I do, more or less, the things that make me, me.
